First, What is Boho Decor?
Boho decor formally referred to as bohemian decor, is basically a really fun and quirky/eclectic way to style your home.
It is hard to describe what a bohemian home or decor truly looks like because there are not specific staple pieces that are representative of this style. One bohemian home is not going to look identical to another.
This style is carefree and relaxed. If you choose to style your home bohemian, you can fill it with eclectic pieces that speak to cultural experiences and liveliness.
If you are wondering what this means or how this is possible, go ahead and read on. Within this post, you will learn about how you can style your home bohemian and tips to nail that boho flair in your space.
Wait, there is Something You Should Know
It should be noted that there are no hard and fast rules for this style but these five basic rules cover the majority of what the bohemian trend entails. The kinds of pieces you can add to your space are vast.
You can go more vintage, or you can go more Victorian, or you can go more industrial with your boho pieces. Even the color palette varies incredibly. You can go minimal or fill your home with warm, rich tones.
Basically, feel free to implement each home decor idea you like to customize your space in a way that is the right fit for you. You might find at the end of this post that you just want to add one or two of these tips and your home will feature a few fun but straightforward boho accents.
However, you may find you like every boho home decor idea offered and decide to restyle your whole home in this unique, eclectic style!
The important thing is that you do what is right for you!
Boho/Bohemian Decor Ideas
1. The color palette
The fun part about this style is that there are no rules for it. Some of the colors associated with the bohemian vibe are:
- Earth Tones (like greens and browns))
- Metallics (like bronze and gold)
- Jewel Tones (like burnt orange or royal blue)
If you cannot choose what color palette suits you best, mix and match them! Use colors that make you feel good. You can check out this website and see examples of bedrooms that feature varying color palettes.
2. Use textures
A bohemian home is filled with a variety of textures. Textured pieces in boho homes include:
- Different wood finishes on furniture
- Macrame tapestries
- Wicker blanket baskets
- Rattan ottomans
- Throw pillows (with things like leather accents or jute tassels)
- Layered rugs
If you are planning to style your home bohemian, think textural. It can be as simple as adding a few throw pillows that have covers made of different materials. You can pair two beige corduroy 20 by 20-inch throw pillows with a faux leather lumbar pillow.
Conversely, you can go a little grander with your decor and purchase rugs in varying sizes to layer. You can check out this website for tips on how to layer rugs like a pro. Interestingly, they do not mention how layering rugs is a very boho thing to do. However, all of the photos of the styled rooms they used are bohemian. So, if you like what you see, definitely use it as inspiration for your home makeover.
3. Add plants!
Pro-tip, they do not have to be real! Just realistic. However, if you feel like you can handle a little responsibility, succulents and cacti are like the perfect bohemian plants.
The key to these plants in direct sunlight (usually around 3-6 hours, so a window sill will usually work well) and moderate water (they’ll let you know they are over-watered because they will look kind of wrinkly and less waxy).
If you want to endeavor into the live succulent world, the bohemian vibe is all about that too!
If you cannot be trusted with live plants, fake greenery is just fine. In addition to being easier to care for, you can display it in unique ways. Pinterest is the perfect place to go for fake plant décor inspo!
The reason plants and greenery are essential to the boho vibe is that plants kind of check all the boxes for the style. The fit the color palette, they add texture to space, they create a more inviting atmosphere. Plus, you can further personalize your space by choosing a vase or pot or planter box that represents your taste.
4. Get your lighting right!
This is a feature that can make or break the style. Now, you do not have to overthink it, but you should definitely be rocking more than a standard overhead light.
Having multiple light sources is very bohemian and will make your home feel softer and more inviting. First things first, if you do have a regular overhead light, you can add a boho touch to it. Consider adding a macramé lampshade or doing a beaded chandelier. This is a great way to add texture to your home too.
However, an inexpensive way to add an additional light source is to use twinkle lights or old Christmas lights (as long as they are white lights). You can pay around $10 for some LED twinkle lights on Amazon.
Another form of lighting that is really awesome to add to your decor is salt lamps. They are cool to look at, and they help purify the air!
5. Don’t be afraid to DIY your decor
One of the best parts about bohemian decor is that a lot of times, it looks homemade, and that is what gives it such a unique fun feel. And since it looks homemade, there is nothing to stop you from making it homemade. It will cost you less money and makes for an enjoyable project.
You can make your own boho wall art or your own lampshades or even your own throw pillow covers for way less than you would pay online or at a store. Again, check out Pinterest for more boho DIY inspo.
Your house can have Victorian looking furniture with industrial style wall art and be filled with plants if you are fully embracing all things boho. Conversely, you can just choose to add a macrame lampshade and a wicker blanket basket for just a touch of boho chic-ness in your space.
It is truly up to you!
