Before we begin, here’s what the Konmarie Method is all about!

The KonMari Method is pro organizer Marie Kondo’s minimalist-inspired approach to tackling your stuff category-by-category.

The entire show is based on Marie Kondos ‘KonMari Method’ which she popularized in her best-selling book called Life-Changing Magic.

In both the book and the show, Kondo outlines how to get your possessions in order by following a simple formula (the KonMari Method) which contains six basic rules for tidying up your space better:

1. Commit yourself to be tidier
2. Imagining your ideal lifestyle
3. Finish discarding your stuff first, before bringing in new items
4. Tidy by category, not by location
5. Follow the right order
6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy!

Now that we know the basics, let’s dive into these 10 helpful organizational tips from the popular KonMari Method, to help save you time, and of course, extra clutter!

1. Store similar-sized items together every day.

Most organizational practices often state that sorting like items with like items (which is a principle that makes the most sense) is the way to go.

BUT Marie Kondo takes it a step further, saying that not only should items with similar utilities be grouped together, but items with a similar size should be stored together as well.

By keeping small items with other small items you ensure that nothing gets lost and it also ensures that you always know where things are in your home.

Marie recommends that whenever possible these items should be stored in drawers in a neatly organized manner.

2. Store items based on the frequency of use to help you save time every day.

Marie Kondo’s rules all follow basic logic.

She suggests that items that you use most often should be kept where you can easily access them, while the more infrequently used items should be placed in those harder-to-reach spots.

That means, for example, your everyday plates, glasses, and mugs should be kept on a shelf that is easy to reach.

While that bread maker of yours (that you almost never use) should probably be stored in the back of the cupboard or a harder-to-reach area.

3. Tackle one category every day until you’ve gone through everything!

Kondos’s method involving piling up every item you own by category only is simply genius.

Even though this tip can make things look pretty disastrous (while you’re in the process of sorting through your possessions), it’s important to realize that this is a normal part of the process and that there is a method to the madness.

Expecting to get through all of your possessions in just a day or two isn’t really realistic and Marie says it’s okay to tackle one category at a time (day by day if you have to), to make a mess of it.

This will help you better manage the decluttering process.

4. Get a perspective of each category.

Next, one of the best things that Marie Kondo suggests (in order to put things into perspective while decluttering) is after you’ve put everything you own from each category into a massive pile, start deciding what to keep and what to get rid of.

Now, her trick is to step back and get a grander perspective of what you have.

This will inevitably help you to realize that maybe you don’t need 6 can openers while you are tackling your kitchen or 18 hats on the day you decide to empty out your closet.

The massive pile may also reveal things you may be missing or that need to be replaced.

5. Praise your home every day.

Not all of Marie Kondo’s advice is strictly practical. Many of the things she suggests actually lean towards the more emotional or even spiritual side of cleaning and organizing the home.

A lot of the KonMari Method actually has to do with mindfulness and one of the steps that Marie always encourages people to undertake is to give thanks for the roof over their heads.

Take a moment to appreciate your home, be it a beautiful house or a tiny apartment.

Thank it first for always protecting you before you begin the process of decluttering.

6. Give thanks to every item you discard, including whatever you consume.

Now, Marie also asks and suggests that for every item that you discard (that had meaning to you and towards its purpose), that you thank it for its service

If the item brought you joy and served its purpose the thankful energy you have towards it when releasing it, will allow positive space for something else to take its place!

7. Give every item you own its own little home.

We’ve all heard the adage… “A place for everything and everything in its place!”

That’s definitely a principle that Marie Kondo abides by and she suggests a strategy that’s been employed by organizational specialists for ages that goes like this.

Make sure every single item you own has a home. Have somewhere specific to put your winter gloves, down to your scissors.

If you properly store them away after use (rather than being left out), it will help you to find things much easier and you’ll know exactly where they should be.

8. Fold your clothing using the KonMari folding method.

Once you’ve decided what possessions you are going to keep and declutter, Marie Kondo has a number of tips on how to properly store certain items.

One of the things that she’s known for is her unique folding method which packs away your clothes vertically rather than horizontally.

If you decide to do this, you should be aiming to fold your clothing into thick rectangles, which then can be turned upward and then stacked back to back.

Once you get the hang of it, it will actually make your drawers much neater and you’ll be able to find things to wear in a breeze!

9. Use clear boxes so you can see everything.

While it might be tempting to store all of your ‘extras’ away in a fashion that hides them from sight, Marie Kondo suggests exactly the opposite.

It’s best to be able to see what is in each box so that you can easily find and access what you’re looking for when you do.

Marie also recommends storing things vertically (and that doesn’t just apply to your clothes).

She likes to have many items stored standing upright so that they’re easy to grab and use on the go. Even in their clear boxes!

10. Everything must spark JOY!

Lastly, Marie’s most popular tip (and the one that she became most famous for) is to pick up each possession you own, hold it and see how it brings you joy

If it brings you joy then you can keep it and if it doesn’t bring you joy, then you should release it with joy.

She suggests that the majority of the objects in your life should spark joy when you touch them and use them and that you shouldn’t keep anything that evokes negative thoughts.

This may seem ambitious but the way Kondo describes it, it ultimately makes a lot of sense! Unless something makes you happy in your life, why would you hang onto it?
