Urban Dictionary’s initial definition of the term girl boss is misleading. Through further investigation, it’s revealed that “a Girl boss” is someone who dreams big and is willing to work hard for those goals. It’s about being your boss in your own life.

The girl boss term was created in 2014 by Sophia Amoruso (founder of Nasty Gal), an online retailer initially launched on eBay. The phrase was popularized to help propel her brand and company into the limelight.

In 2017, Nasty Gal had revenue of $100M and was well-known worldwide. Because girl boss was not just for Sophia, it became a famous brand and term.

Any woman could become a girl boss. It was a model for female entrepreneurs rising, and it quickly became a way to protest patriarchy.

It also symbolized a community of Millennial women eager to achieve their own personal power and success while not sacrificing their femininity.

As you can see, being a girl boss is more than just a term. It’s a brand leadership lifestyle that promises women can be successful.
